This chapter examines the implications of the socio-political shifts in the four Southern European countries for the South Asian diaspora there. The anti-immigrant discourse propelling harsher border securitization raises questions about what the future really holds for racialized migrants, such as those from South Asian countries who are already in these countries or those who might come to their shores seeking refuge, work, or family reunification. The chapter interrogates what the future also holds for Southern European countries with economies increasingly fuelled by the flexibilized labour of “othered” migrants. It argues that there is a tension between populist rhetoric that uses “imaginative geographies” to vilify migrants and the increasing need to woo migrant labour as a replacement for an ageing local workforce. There is a need to move from instrumentalization of migration to genuine and ethical engagement with hospitality instead of bordering.
