An overview of H. Odera Oruka’s life and works is presented in this chapter. It is worthwhile to investigate the persistent focus on the future that permeates H. Odera Oruka’s writings, particularly those found in the retrospective compilation of his articles that he was working on at the time of his demise, Practical Philosophy: In Search of An Ethical Minimum. The primary goal of this chapter is to develop Oruka’s philosophy from a pragmatic standpoint by extensively examining and criticizing him. It defines, explains, and assesses Oruka’s philosophical and ethical commitment by situating Oruka within a range of philosophical discourses that address important global issues such as justicejustice, humanhuman rights, ethical duty, environment, and politics. It specifically supports Oruka’s claim that everyone is entitled to at least a basic level of human decency by showing how that moral precept might be used to address a number of distressing human problems like inequality, poverty and inhumanity among others. It also seeks to incorporate and use some ethical value-systems or philosophies from Africa, such as Ubuntu.
