Partial differential equations are functional equations containing functions of two independent variables. If one of those variables is time, they are a powerful tool for addressing distributional dynamics. This chapter introduces the classic method of characteristics for solving linear, semi-linear, and quasi-linear one-dimensional equations. It also contains applications to transport, to age-dependent demographics, and to income distribution when there is aggregate social mobility.

摘要

Partial differential equations are functional equations containing functions of two independent variables. If one of those variables is time, they are a powerful tool for addressing distributional dynamics. This chapter introduces the classic method of characteristics for solving linear, semi-linear, and quasi-linear one-dimensional equations. It also contains applications to transport, to age-dependent demographics, and to income distribution when there is aggregate social mobility.
