Recently, research laboratories and biomedical startups promising significant medical enhancement to our minds and bodies have flooded the landscape of science and biotechnology, making what once seemed eugenic hyperbole a thriving market. This chapter explores the ethical, legal, and social implications of one corner of the market: medical brain enhancement technologies. Analyzing the emerging fields of neurotech enabled by artificial intelligence, biohacking of one’s genes and genomes, and human gene editing research and development against the historical backdrop of biomedical research and development, I elucidate the potential dangers around how society conceptualizes race and ability, and how it addresses racism and bias. I argue that our present culture of innovation dovetails with extant inequalities in medicine and healthcare that stand to perpetuate and amplify racial inequality and bias in our algorithmic and social systems.

摘要
