This study investigates the gendered vulnerabilities experienced by female journalists in Nigeria within the context of at-risk reporting. As female journalists play a crucial role in shaping public discourse, their unique challenges in navigating the journalistic landscape merit attention. Employing a mixed methods approach using surveys and interviews, this chapter explores the multifaceted nature of the gender-specific risk faced by female journalists, with a focus on the Nigerian media environment. A questionnaire was used to extract responses from 112 female journalists, 28 of whom participated in oral interviews. The findings reveal an interplay of societal norms and institutional dynamics that contribute to the heightened vulnerability of female journalists. The study reveals the range of challenges impeding women journalists’ ability to report freely and safely. By shedding light on these gendered vulnerabilities, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the obstacles faced by female journalists in at-risk reporting scenarios. The insights garnered from this study can inform the development of targeted interventions, policies, and support systems to create a more inclusive and secure environment for female journalists.
