The Magada/Mhandu Saga as a Case Study of Online Sexual Harassment of Female Journalists by Their Managers in Zimbabwe
摘要
Despite the plethora of studies on harassment of female journalists in Western countries, research on the involvement of managers as perpetrators remains sparse. In Africa, sexual harassment is understudied. To fill this lacuna, I conducted a case study of a WhatsApp audio recording of former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) television director Robson Mhandu, who solicited sex from presenter Farai Juliet Magada in return for favourable working conditions. Thematic analysis was performed to (i) examine the relationship that male media managers seek to establish with their female subordinates through WhatsApp messages, (ii) identify female journalists’ reactions, and (iii) assess the impact of these responses on the duo’s working relationship and subordinates’ careers. It has emerged that sexual harassment is enabled by patriarchy, which is embedded in a constellation of factors, such as religion, politics, tradition, age, education, and technology. As coping mechanisms, female journalists “play along,” hoping to withdraw from the arrangement later or allow themselves to be violated to sustain their careers. Owing to bureaucracy and a lack of urgency from authorities, fear of reprisals and the conflation of politics and professionalism, many cases are unreported. The absence of a specific act dealing with sexual harassment in the newsroom and a clear ZBC policy are enormous setbacks. The following initiatives are recommended: the formulation of a clear sexual harassment policy at ZBC, the regular training of journalists and managers, availing basic information on sexual harassment freely on the internet and in physical format, the enactment of a sexual harassment act, the imposition of stiffer penalties to offenders, and the creation of a registry that can be used by employers to screen prospective employees. In addition, policies and laws should be applied indiscriminately. Conflicted people should be excluded from the arbitration of cases.
