This chapter explores the issue of reporter trauma within the context of African journalism, especially in the Southern African context. African journalists often face unique challenges and adversities in their profession, not least the ever-present threat of violence and/or incarceration. These hostile environments can have profound psychological and emotional effects on reporters, resulting in trauma. I propose to investigate these issues through interviews with journalists in the field and retired journalists. The chapter delves into various incidents and situations that can lead to traumatic experiences, including covering violent conflicts, reporting on political corruption, and exposing human rights abuses. By shedding light on the intense pressures and dangers faced by Southern African journalists, this chapter aims to create awareness about the debilitating impact of trauma on their wellbeing. Additionally, the chapter explores the potential long-term consequences of trauma on African journalists. It discusses the impact on journalists’ personal lives, professional careers, and overall mental health. Lastly, the chapter concludes with recommendations for mitigating reporter trauma in African journalism.
