This chapter outlines the main benefits of nature-based solutions (NbS) in addressing the ecological and environmental challenges of cities, as well as the impacts of climate change and related risks to humans and ecosystems. It covers aspects such as microclimate regulation, air quality improvement, and water management. The key ecosystem services provided by NbS are listed in relation to the relevant Sustainable Development Goals. The contribution of nature-based solutions to climate change adaptation, risk management, and prevention is broadly discussed. Relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are presented accordingly. For each KPI, the most influential parameters and characteristics of NbS are described, based on existing literature. The focus is primarily on human comfort and stormwater retention.
