In this introductory chapter we provide a brief history of vehicular traffic and point out the continuing challenges societies have been facing while developing and managing such systems. We also describe recent advances in road vehicle automation and connectivity and discuss how such technologies may be utilized to solve (or at least mitigate) the above issues. By no means we plan to cover all aspects of road transportation but rather to motivate the technical material presented in the forthcoming chapters.
