Teaching Engineers to Balance Creativity and Their Use of Design for Additive Manufacturing
摘要
Additive manufacturing (AM) processes present designers with unique opportunities while imposing process-specific limitations. To harness the potential of AM, engineers must learn about emerging manufacturing processes and be adept at designing solutions that balance AM opportunities and limitations through design for AM (DfAM). Furthermore, they must balance the creative freedoms afforded by AM against achieving the functional requirements of the design task. In this chapter, we provide recommendations for the formulation of DfAM educational interventions (e.g., content and design tasks) that encourage designers to balance creativity and the use of DfAM in designs. We also provide recommendations for assessment tools to evaluate the effectiveness of formal DfAM educational interventions.
