Health Psychology Consultancy in Digital Health
摘要
In the United Kingdom, the digital health sector has expanded rapidly in recent years, introducing various innovative technologies to enhance healthcare delivery such as mobile health applications or apps, wearable devices, and patient portals (Imison et al., Delivering the benefits of digital health care (pp. 5–6). London: Nuffield Trust, 2016). Direct-to-consumer mobile health apps have seen significant growth due to their convenient accessibility. While many aim to support health behaviour change, many struggle to deliver a user experience that fosters sustained engagement and adherence, limiting their potential health benefits (Dennison et al., Opportunities and challenges for smartphone applications in supporting health behavior change: Qualitative study. JMIR mHealth and uHealth, 3(1), e23, 2013; Yardley et al., Understanding and promoting effective engagement with digital behavior change interventions. American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 51(5), 833–842, 2016). Health psychologists are uniquely positioned to address these challenges. Our behavioural science knowledge, research skills, and practical experience creating user-centred, evidence-based interventions align closely with user experience (UX) principles. Through stepping into consultancy roles, health psychologists can bridge the gap between academia and industry, guiding the development of scientifically robust, user-centred digital health products that resonate with diverse user groups. This chapter explores the digital health landscape and associated challenges, highlighting the value health psychologists can bring in enhancing user experience through consultancy. It will examine the opportunities and challenges of consulting in this fast-evolving field, providing practical guidance for those looking to begin.
