This chapter focuses mainly on independent, community-dwelling adults who have fecal incontinence. This chapter includes a review of factors associated with fecal incontinence, considerations for assessment in this population, and strategies for conservative management. Conservative management includes support of self-management of lifestyle changes, including diet modifications; use of medications; behavioral interventions such as pelvic floor exercises, biofeedback therapy, and electrical stimulation; and extracorporeal magnetic innervation. The chapter also addresses the containment of fecal incontinence with devices and absorbent products.
