Friends with benefits relationships (FWBRs) can be defined as sexual relationships between two people who are friends. It is constitutive that there is no romantic love relationship between those involved, and sexual interactions happen more than once. FWBRs were seen mainly as experimental relationships that are part of youth culture. Some researchers even argue that “FWB situations are common among young adults, not necessarily a replacement for romantic relationships but function as a romantic relationship. It’s a different kind of engagement.” Nevertheless, this phenomenon is not limited to adolescents since some research findings show that these are also meaningful relationships among older adults. Although the popularity of friendships with benefits (FBW) is increasing, there is still little research on the topic. In this chapter, relevant research results will be presented and discussed, in particular, with regard to possible significant factors such as gender and culture.
