Love in Unhappy Couples
摘要
Defining love as attachment to and caring for the other, I argue that some unhappy couples feel love for one another, a love they may not speak about to one another and that they may not even recognize they feel. To focus the discussion of what might be love in unhappy couples, the chapter offers a fictional short story about a married couple with a long history of difficult marital interaction and who, despite their history, cannot exist apart from each other. The idea that love may be unspoken or not in awareness of partners in unhappy couples contrasts with the view that is common in social psychology and in English language dictionary definitions of “love,” that love must be verbalized and in a person’s awareness in order to be counted as existing. It also contrasts with the view that love cannot coexist with an enduring pattern of strongly negative feelings and prolonged conflict. Although unhappy couples may remain together for reasons other than love (for example, economic dependency, thinking there is no better alternative, a belief that divorce is wrong), I argue that some unhappy couples remain together because of love, even possibly a love that is unspoken and out of their awareness. The chapter offers a number of conceptual paths to understanding how strong negativity may be linked to love, including that in some cultural contexts, negativity may be a form of expressing love and not even be perceived as negativity.
