Dramatic ‘Scene’ (1863) in MW, probably written in summer and autumn 1853. Norbert, the Queen’s favoured minister, intends to tell her that he loves her cousin, Constance. Constance persuades him that he must approach the matter in an indirect, flattering way; as a result, the ageing Queen thinks that she is the one Norbert loves. Constance resolves to accept the situation but Norbert continues to declare his undying love for her and the piece ends with the lovers kissing as the royal guard comes to arrest them. ‘Each crisis floods the situation with fresh ironies. …The Queen shows how daringly she can love; Constance, how nobly she can sacrifice; Norbert, how purely he can prefer love to any useful compromise’ (Irvine and Honan [1974], p. 313).
