DP poem, written probably around 1861–1863, where potential young lovers ‘missed it, lost it for ever’ (68). Sources for the life of poor, aspiring artists include RB’s acquaintance with painters and sculptors in *Rome and *London; Pierre-Jean de Béranger’s poems ‘Maudit printemps!’ and ‘Le Grenier’ (L 4.115–16); and—perhaps called to mind by his death in 1861—Henry Murger’s Scènes de la Vie de Bohème (1851). In ‘Le Grenier’ and Murger lovers do act on their desire, and, if briefly, have ‘sighed deep, laughed free,/Starved, feasted, despaired,—been happy’ (63–4). The couple in ‘Youth and Art’ live on and achieve only outer, superficial success. Smith’s physical engagement with ‘sticks and clay’ (5, 23–4) gives way to external honours. Kate Brown’s natural, untaught singing presumably stops after her rich marriage, and the risk of being seen uncovered (‘corset-lacing’, 28) is replaced by attendance at ‘bals-paré‘ (58) or full-dress balls.
