Painter, architect and art historian whose Le Vite de’ Più eccellenti Pittori, Scultori e Architetti (1550, 1568) presents the Renaissance as a progression from Giotto to the perfection of Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo. His work was very popular in mid- and late nineteenth-century Europe. EBB reports in April 1853 that RB is ‘fond of digging at Vasari’ (BC 19.61). He uses the Vite particularly in ‘Fra Lippo Lippi’, ‘Andrea del Sarto’ and ‘Old Pictures in Florence’.
