Virtual surgical planning has emerged as a transformative tool in facial transplantation, and a conspicuous amount of time is spent in computer planning before performing this complex procedure. By creating detailed, patient-specific models of the facial anatomy, VSP enables surgeons to preoperatively define the chain of surgical steps, the sequence of osteotomies, their course, and representation of vascular anatomy with identification of vessels to perform anastomosis. However, the greatest advantage of virtual reality planning for facial transplantation is the definition of morphological matchup between the donor and the recipient. In this regard, VSP enables to match osteotomies for facial excision with those performed in the allograft, allowing for unprecedented accuracy during fixation. Future technological advancement will help to redefine other steps in facial transplantation, with particular importance assigned to soft tissue simulation.

摘要
