This introductory chapter provides a comprehensive overview of Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) software in craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery, detailing its development, current applications, and comparative analysis of key platforms. VSP enables surgeons to conduct patient-specific, 3D surgical planning using advanced imaging, segmentation, and modeling tools. Core software such as Mimics, ProPlan, and Brainlab’s Elements offers solutions for intricate procedures including osteotomies, custom implant design, and soft tissue simulations, contributing to improved surgical precision, reduced intraoperative time, and enhanced patient outcomes. The chapter explores the distinct functionalities of these platforms, from segmentation and 3D modeling to visualization tools like multiplanar reconstruction and virtual endoscopy, which facilitate complex decision-making and preoperative strategy formulation. Further, regulatory considerations like FDA and MDR compliance are discussed to emphasize the importance of clinical safety and efficacy in the selection of VSP tools.
