Certification of a Fire Door – An Overview

Fire doors are passive devices to mitigate the consequences of fire, by preventing the spread of fire and smoke inside a building. Their certification provides the costumers with a performance label when subject to fire and heat. Various testing standards are available in various regions of the world (US, Europe, China) but on the essential they are in close agreement: the time dependent temperature profile that defines the thermal load. In Europe the relevant standards are: EN 1634-1; EN 13501-2; and EN 1363-1. The present paper develops a market survey of existing fire doors certified for at least 60 min. The analysis shows that the large majority employs a metallic frame that provides the structural integrity. The outer surfaces are made up of two plies that can have coating on its surface as fire retardant agent. Thermal insulation is mostly provided by mineral wools. For the 60 min certification the overall thickness of the doors is around 50 mm while longer times require larger thickness.
