The levels of dysfunction in the human body range from easily reversible hypofunction to impaired bio-regulation, inflammation of varying depths, extracellular matrix degeneration and fibrosis, organ failure, and neoplasia. At each of these levels, there are discernible changes to the ECM. These changes in turn reflect and, to some degree, determine the severity and the chronicity of the disease. Particularly as dysfunction in an organ or tissue progresses, the breakdown of the ECM is an accompanying feature that can accelerate decline. In neoplasia, tumor cells actively deposit, degrade, and manipulate the ECM by taking control of local fibroblasts and macrophages.

摘要
