Neoplasia means “new growth” as per the Greek-derived medical terminology. It is new in the sense that tissues erupt and grow in places where they do not below. It is also novel in the sense that the neoplastic tissues arise from mutated cells of the host. These aberrant cells should have been extinguished by various housekeeping and failsafe mechanisms of the body, but have survived to a stage where they can become parasitic.
