The Role of the Community in Medical Education
摘要
This chapter explores the evolving role of communities in medical education, emphasizing authentic engagement over theoretical models. It redefines “community” as a dynamic entity, whose identity is best understood through direct interaction and immersion. The chapter distinguishes “community” from “society,” advocating for curricula that address unique local needs while contributing to societal well-being. It highlights the need to address power imbalances between medical institutions and communities, which often hinder genuine collaboration. Using the African philosophy of Ubuntu as a guiding framework, the chapter promotes reciprocal, dignity-driven relationships. Models like Rifkin’s CHOICE and the ABANTU framework underscore the importance of community empowerment and collaborative education. A case study on South Africa’s Homestay Project illustrates the transformative impact of embedding students within communities. This holistic approach enriches medical education, fosters social accountability, and strengthens the healthcare system by aligning training with community-driven insights and values.
