From Theory to Practice: Meeting Design Specifications for Isolated DC–DC Converters

The primary responsibility of power converters is to seamlessly transfer energy from a source, or multiple sources, to a load or multiple loads. In this chapter, we provide a high-level overview of several key design considerations for this technology. We begin by examining the trade-offs between isolated and non-isolated DC–DC converters. Since this book focuses exclusively on power electronics, with a high-voltage side operating at several hundred volts and a low-voltage side carrying several hundred amps, isolated DC–DC converters are the most economical choice in terms of cost, reliability, and compatibility.
