Indigenous Business Supply Chain Alliance: A Kinship Perspective
摘要
The concept of “kinship” among indigenous African businesses communities that has been used to promote economic empowerment and assist in the formation of more stable and resilient communities can be a potent construct to augment frameworks of supply chain alliances. The principal inquiry is whether the linkage between kinship concept and supply chain alliances can explain how best indigenous businesses can improve and strengthen supply chain alliances. The present chapter aims to investigate the impact of kinship on indigenous business supply chain alliances. To this end, the chapter examines the various dimensions of kinship (kinship relatedness, kinship reciprocity, and fictive kinship) that affect how we understand supply chain alliances and, more crucially, how these kinship dimensions influence the efficacy of such strategic supply chain alliances. Utilizing empirical case studies from indigenous business proprietors in South Africa, the chapter demonstrates that indigenous supply alliances are significantly strengthened when underpinned by robust networks of familial kinship bonds (family kin-oriented alliances). Furthermore, indigenous alliances that are founded on principles of honesty and trust, along with a commitment to altruistic actions (reciprocity kin-oriented alliances), exhibit greater efficiency in resource acquisition and price negotiation throughout the supply chain. Additionally, alliances formed through fictive kinship relationships (fictive and intimacy kin-oriented alliances), which are not established through biological ties or marital connections, are also vital to the successful development of an effective indigenous business supply chain.
