After the end of the Yugoslav wars (including the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina), the European Union decided to increase its engagement in the Balkans, primarily aiming to stabilize the region. The EU quickly confirmed its willingness to expand to include the Western Balkans (WB). The Western Balkan countries are still at various stages of the accession process, which has been ongoing for years. Still, several factors contributed to the delay of the process, including the slow implementation of reforms to strengthen the rule of law and ethnic disputes. The chapter aims to analyze Bosnia’s accession process to the EU within a broader context, specifically the EU’s policy towards the Western Balkans. Discussing this issue is essential for understanding the European integration process of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The chronological framework of the paper spans from 1995 to 2024, culminating in the European Council’s decision to begin accession negotiations with Bosnia.
