Chem U?: An Android Interactive Chemistry-Learning App for STEM Students
摘要
Recognizing that students are losing interest and facing learning difficulties in chemistry, there is a necessity to implement a new instructional approach. Using Unity, C#, and Firebase, the developers created Chem U? – an innovative Android e-learning app designed to enhance the learning experience of STEM students taking General Chemistry 1. The app introduces a gamified approach to learning, featuring leaderboards, scoring systems, badges, interactive modules, and game-based assessments for students, with learning and content management tools for teachers. It is accessible on any Android device running version 8.0 (Oreo) or higher with at least 400 MB available storage. Chem U? achieved ratings of 99.94% in functionality testing and 100% in compatibility. The app underwent evaluation using the Mobile Application Rating Scale, garnering a highly acceptable rating (M = 3.76, SD = 0.46). With its efficacy evaluated at the University of Perpetual Help Molino, independent samples t-test revealed that students using Chem U? as a supplementary resource exhibited significantly improved exam results compared to those relying solely on classroom instruction, t(86) = 10.02, p < .05. Similarly, paired samples t-test showed a significant improvement in exam scores of students using Chem U? as a self-learning tool, t(21) = –13.30, p < .05. Chem U? emerges as a valuable tool for both supplementary and self-directed learning, effectively addressing the challenges in teaching and learning General Chemistry 1, while promoting student engagement and academic success.
