The introductory chapter (this chapter) deals with the main categories that contribute to explain the capacity of leaders to manipulate the emotions of the national masses (following Sigmund Freud and Norbert Elias) by highlighting the concept of the charismatic leader (Max Weber), the resentment and the humiliation of the deprived individuals (Hannah Arendt, Max Scheler), the obedience of the crowd, the dominance of love and hate, all of which are strongly intricated within the mass. The leader is legitimated for restoring the collective dignity and creating an active community (Max Weber). As shown in this chapter, these various dimensions frame the concept of “over reality” that takes place within an authoritarian regime (Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno).
