In recent years Green building (GB) technologies has increasingly gained popularity across many countries as one among the strategies towards achieving sustainability. Despite their growing popularity still there is little knowledge on GB technology, similarly, it is not clearly known what motivates tenants to buy/rent GBs in Sub-Saharan African countries like Tanzania. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the factors that drive the occupancy of green certified buildings in Tanzania. A total of 272 questionnaires were distributed to occupants of the identified green certified residential buildings. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Based on the findings, the top three ranked driving factors included the following: Beautiful appearance of the building and design; Building location and Building amenities. The findings further revealed that the occupants of GBs were not influenced by the green certification status of their GBs. The results imply that there is little knowledge on GB. Therefore, this study will foster better understanding of the drivers and also the consciousness of this information such as the drivers will contribute towards improving the awareness of green building technology to community members so as to enhance achievement of sustainability.
