Official language policies have significantly impacted lesser-known languages, leading to the decline and extinction of ethnic languages. The loss of these languages is not only the disappearance of linguistic heritage but also the erosion of history, culture, and unique worldviews. This chapter examines these issues within the context of the Tai communities of Northeast India and gives an overview of Tai migration, assimilation, and the subsequent decline of the Tai-Ahom language due to state language policies. Additionally, this chapter integrates a service-learning perspective, emphasizing community-driven language revitalization efforts. Through collaborations between local Tai communities, researchers, and student-led initiatives, service learning fosters an experiential and participatory approach to language preservation. These efforts revitalize endangered languages and empower communities, blending academic knowledge with hands-on cultural engagement. Service learning can serve as a bridge between education and community action, ensuring that language preservation becomes a sustainable and inclusive process while raising awareness of the broader implications of language loss on cultural identity.
