Use of Masking Metrics with Contextual Information: Vessel Noise Increases in the Salish Sea and the Implications for Southern Resident Killer Whales
摘要
The use of a masking metric has previously been advocated for as a way to characterize the impact of acoustic disturbance on at-risk species and as a more intuitive means to communicate this to managers and policymakers. To further this, adjustments were made to masking calculations that quantify echolocation to allow for a wider environmental context to be considered. In this case the target strength of the prey item in the calculation was reduced as a means to represent the overall decline in prey size and age. Data from southern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca, SRKW) were used to parameterize an example calculation with varied prey sizes.
