Remy Assistant: A Socially Assistive Robot for Cognitive Support in Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

As the world’s population gets older, the need for dementia care is growing, putting a lot of pressure on caregivers. This paper introduces REMY, a Socially Assistive Robot (SAR) that is intended to offer cognitive support, remote monitoring, and social interaction to Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. REMY combines voice recognition, remote communication, and mental evaluation features, in a compact, user-friendly design using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W for processing and an ESP32 for motion control and environmental awareness. The robot comes with a complementary mobile app for caregivers that allows them to check on patients from afar, perform mental health tests, and manage Remy’s contacts. All system’s functionalities, like speech recognition accuracy, motion response, and data synchronization efficacy were verified through testing. The experimental results proved a reliable performance making REMY a promising, scalable and effective solution for Alzheimer’s and dementia care.
