Sustainable Breeding: A Path Toward Resilient Beekeeping

The evolution of honey bees spans over 50 million years and demonstrates a high genetic diversity that has arisen from adaptations to local climatic conditions and plant resources. Recent studies emphasize the importance of genotype–environment interactions for the survivability and productivity of bees. Sustainable breeding is defined as a concept that combines selective breeding for important traits with the preservation of locally adapted bees. The focus is on breeding bees that are resistant to pests and parasites and can adapt to climatic challenges. An ecologically adapted management approach is recommended, which promotes the development of resilience rather than relying on chemical treatments. Additionally, the significance of local breeding initiatives is highlighted to preserve the genetic identity of regional populations and reduce the dependence on imported queens. To address the challenges of modern beekeeping, such as climate change and the spread of pests, well-defined breeding goals and close collaboration within the beekeeping community are essential. Sustainable breeding and management must go hand in hand to ensure healthy and resilient bee populations.
