Honey bees mate in flight at drone congregation areas (DCAs), where thousands of drones from nearby colonies compete to mate with queens. Before mating, queens and drones perform orientation flights, typically on warm, sunny days. These brief flights help them to familiarize themselves with their hive’s surroundings. Mating flights, which can last up to 30 min, involve the queen mating with 10–20 drones on average. After mating, queens store up to ten million sperm cells in their spermatheca for a lifetime. If a queen does not collect enough sperm during her first flight, she may take multiple mating flights. To localize DCAs, researchers use various methods, ranging from listening for drone buzzing to advanced techniques like satellite imagery and drone traps. An efficient drone trap is cone-shaped, about 1 m high, and made of nylon tulle. It has a top width of 200 mm and a bottom width of 500 mm. The top is closed, while the bottom remains open. Inside the cone, virgin queens are attached to attract drones. The trap is strategically placed in potential DCA zones identified using Google Earth. When many drones enter the trap, it indicates the location of the DCA.
