Drawing on affordance theory, this study investigates how enterprise social media (ESM) affordances influence employee digital-enabled performance through employee engagement and communication visibility. Analysis of survey data from 314 Chinese employees demonstrates that ESM affordances (association, visibility, persistence, and editability) enhance both task and innovative performance through employee engagement. Communication visibility exhibits differential moderating effects: negative for work engagement innovative performance relationship, but positive for organizational engagement innovative performance relationship. The findings contribute to understanding ESM’s role in digital performance and suggest implications for organizational digital workplace strategies.

Communication visibility exhibits differential moderating effects: negative for work engagement innovative performance relationship, but positive for organizational engagement innovative performance relationship. The findings contribute to understanding ESM’s role in digital performance and suggest implications for organizational digital workplace strategies.
