Each generational cohort - Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y (Millennials), and Gen Z - brings unique experiences and attitudes that shape their expectations of artificial intelligence AI. This study explores these differences and seeks to understand generational attitudes toward AI in the context of Singapore – a prominent technology hub of the world. The study addresses this gap by analyzing survey results from 1,000 adults residing in Singapore based on generations and identifying differences in perception of AI’s social impact. Findings indicate primary generational differences in AI usage and perception. The youngest generation Gen Z has the highest level of both usage and knowledge of AI, followed by Millennials. While the majority of the population showed a positive sentiment in perceiving the role of AI in society based on its strong capacity, notable concerns arise for job replacement, fraud, and ethical privacy concerns. AI is expected by the public to transform and advance key sectors, albeit the overall social transformation is under skepticism. Generational perceptions of AI shape attitudes toward adoption and its role in society. Therefore, bridging generational divides in AI perceptions can drive responsible adoption, ensuring AI systems meet the diverse needs of society.
