Reinterpreting Peking Opera Through Scenario-Based Design and Extended Reality: A Case Study of “The Romance of the Western Chamber”
摘要
Peking Opera, recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, stands a treasured gem of Chinese traditional culture. Following the proportion of its audience diminishes and the challenges of inheritance soar, it is crucial to explore transformative approaches to opera presentation. Taking the Peking Opera “The Romance of the West Chamber: Farewell at the Long Pavilion” as a case study, this paper describes and analyses the development of an initial prototype of interactive space by relying on scenario-based design (SBD) process to deeply integrate extended reality (XR) technology. SBD focuses on building scenarios to achieve plot analysis and context mapping of Peking opera, thus establishing the basic framework of XR; while XR continuously expands the experience through digitalization, visualization, and interaction. The study employs Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper for modelling, Enscape and Unity3D for interactive design, also combines behavioral responses including pop-up UIs, space navigation, and environmental effects to create an immersive media space. Ultimately, the evaluation results from professionals suggest that the method of SBD and XR intervening in Peking Opera not only enriches the audience’s emotional resonance and cultural identity, but also provides strategies for the dissemination of traditional performing arts. It further broadens the application boundaries of SBD in user experience, opening new possibilities for the development of cultural heritage through XR. The presentation and discussion of this initial prototype outlines future research directions in the field of interactive space.
