Ripple Effects: Exploring Holographic Projection's Potential in Enhancing Plastic Pollution Awareness

The ocean supports the well-being and livelihoods of millions of people around the world. However, plastic pollution has become one of the most serious challenges facing the global marine ecosystem. In this context, environmental education is seen as a key strategy to address this challenge, with the core goal of creating opportunities for every citizen to enhance their understanding of the natural world and how to protect it, while inspiring society to actively participate in environmental protection. Based on the Fogg Behavioral Model (FBM) and holographic projection technology, this study designed and developed an interactive multisensory space (IMS) to explore its application in plastic pollution education. The IMS integrates visual, auditory, and tactile experiences, aiming to enhance children's emotional engagement with marine conservation and improve their behavioral efficacy. Through dynamic images, immersive sound simulations, and tactile feedback devices, the IMS allows children to personally experience the impact of plastic pollution on the marine ecosystem and cultivate their emotional resonance and actions for marine conservation. In addition, to further strengthen the “ability” part, the IMS also contains a garbage sorting interactive device. The system is guided by virtual characters to help children learn and complete accurate garbage sorting tasks. Experimental results show that this immersive holographic projection educational tool provides a more meaningful experience, inspires children to enhance their environmental awareness, and empowers them to act as “environmental ambassadors” in their families and communities.
