One of the greatest challenges faced by game designers and developers has been the distribution and commercialization of digital games in a fast-paced, competitive, and ever-changing market. Independent game studios or solo developers have been searching for alternative monetization strategies to the pay-to-play approach such as free-to-play and play-to-earn to address the monopolization of the game marketplace, under a decentralized Web 3 gaming activity. Although these models have been controversial either due to the interruption of the gameplay activity or the prioritization of payment over gameplay, there is a general lack of information on circular economy in the game marketplace using interoperable game assets between two or more game platforms. This study aims to identify the characteristics that digital game assets should contain to ensure interoperability in different games and their implications for the gaming experience. The platform QUDO from the Block Bastards enterprise was analyzed and the perspectives of twenty-eight indie game developers and players were gathered concerning the reward system, interoperability and game experience. A framework crossing interoperability, in-game assets and gameplay experience is proposed within a circular gaming ecosystem.
