Connective Matter: An Interface for Personalized Emotion Self-regulation and Communication Through Material Haptic Action

Touch plays a crucial role in emotional development, well-being, and communication, with studies demonstrating its ability to reduce stress and promote bonding. Affective haptic technologies have recently been developed to facilitate emotion self-regulation and remote interpersonal emotion communication. However, variations in cultural context, differences in the technology used, and individual sensitivities impact the outcomes of affective haptic interactions, making customization parameters essential. This paper introduces Connective Matter, an interface designed to pair with affective haptic wearables to personalize haptic emotion self-regulation and communication. The paper discusses prior studies on affective haptic wearables, details the design and implementation of Connective Matter, and explores its potential applications for enhancing health and well-being.
