MoodMiles: A Gamified Exercise Application for Mental and Physical Well-Being in Young Adults with All Abilities
摘要
As mental health needs increase and barriers exist to readily available wellness supports, so do approaches that are both physically and mentally accessible. More than 1 in 4 adults in the United States (28.7%) live with some types of disability, including cognitive (13.9%) and mobility (12.2%) impairments, yet many face barriers to accessing exercise, which is crucial for mental health. All of these are augmented by burnout, anxiety, and depression, especially in our fast-paced world. MoodMiles is a gamified exercise app that helps the user ‘run with animals and conquer bad feelings,’ helping develop mental wellness through exercise geared to young adults with variable abilities. Based on the user’s HAQ-Di score, which assesses their physical abilities, making activities achievable according to each player’s physical capacity. The relatable animated animals correspond to health aspect or concern, such as Dash the dog, who tracks steps; Zippy the hummingbird, who tracks heart rate; Bruno the bear, who monitors calories burned; and Snooze the sloth, who supports healthy sleep patterns. The users gain points when they meet their health goals by completing outside, real-world physical activities, while the app data is tracked through smartphones and smartwatches. Though the gamified approach is widely used in health apps for the young population, MoodMiles appears to be one of the first to promote an interactive ecosystem of digital creatures that provides playful companionship to help people with mental health concerns. It offers a variety of accessible modes for users with a variety of disabilities, featuring audio and visual cues, customizable interfaces, adjustable speeds, high-contrast colors, and adaptive design to ensure a welcoming experience for all players. Overall, MoodMiles is a digital tool designed to help people stay healthy by focusing on connection and companionship rather than solely on metrics, creating an encouraging and enjoyable way to support wellness.
