Photovoice Method for Participatory Software Development – Insights from the KARLA Project
摘要
For participatory research and the development of digital technologies, the photovoice method offers promising opportunities to overcome the participation challenges for people with intellectual disabilities. Based on the concept of Participatory Action Research (PAR), photovoice enables participants to visualize and discuss their perspectives and initiate change processes. In the inclusive KARLA project, the photovoice method is applied to investigate how it can be used to foster the participation of people with intellectual disabilities in the research and development of digital technologies. Thus, researchers with disabilities photographed and discussed aspects of their everyday lives they associated with the project and evaluated the method. Using the photovoice method, the wishes and requirements for the technology could be revealed, which were jointly transferred into actual recommendations for technical development in the inclusive team. The participants rated the method positive and worth repeating. Photovoice proved its value in the KARLA project from multiple perspectives, contributing both to the participation of people with intellectual disabilities and to technological development. The paper addresses possible solutions to challenges related to technical skills, task complexity, diversity of perspectives and language complexity when utilizing the photovoice method for the participation of people with intellectual disabilities.
