In this chapter, we will describe the introduction to the new book. The five main subjects that will be described are as follows: The first three items in the list are the foundation of our knowledge regarding the activity of the mitochondria in vivo. The 4th issue will describe the contribution of the late Prof. Britton Chance to our current understanding of the function of the mitochondria in vitro and, more importantly, under in vivo conditions. The fifth item on the list describes the concept of oxygen homeostasis in the body.
