The purpose of this chapter is to draw attention to specifically Western paradigms that can govern how AI is responded to because (1) Western culture has permeated much of the globe, and therefore influences how many people understand technology in general and (2) there are other paradigms that may offer more ways to understand and relate to AI in particular—specifically a perspective found in Indigenous communities popularly referred to as Animism. When we are operating within a paradigm, we tend to identify it with reality itself, and can hardly ever see potential ways of thinking, imagining, and relating beyond what the paradigm allows. If we are able to see into other ways of framing existence and experience, other possibilities come into view, which may free us to engage with the new and unknown in ways that neither cause us to fear and retreat nor idealize and worship. Animism offers a way to move beyond this binary.
