Once the realm of science fiction and fantasy, artificial intelligence (AI) with sentience or the capacity to take over feels closer to reality than ever. “AI” chat-predictive programs like ChatGPT, Bing Bot, Gemini, and artistic rendering software like DALL-E 2 and Midjourney have boomed in the last few years, flaunting technical prowess and infinite power. The popularity and efficacy of these programs have spurred a slew of copycat systems, and raised praises and concerns by educators, professionals, politicians, and citizens alike. The impacts are inescapable: in personal conversations and in news reporting, reactions vacillate between terror and fascination. On the one hand, people see technological advancement as always positive and AI as a new tool. On the other, it poses an existential risk to humans, who face possible annihilation should these systems gain consciousness or fall into the wrong hands, and the biosphere, as these programs consume resources at an alarming rate. It is even rumored, something that started on the social media platform X, that ChatGPT’s creator Sam Altman wears a blue backpack that contains the AI’s destruction codes, just in case (Chapman). Updated Abstract: Once the realm of science fiction and fantasy, artificial intelligence (AI) with sentience or the capacity to take over feels closer to reality than ever. The rise of chat-predictive programs, advanced AI software and technology is both praised for societal advancement and criticized for potential and actual harm. The impacts are inescapable: in personal conversations and in news reporting, reactions vacillate between terror and fascination. Yet, these conversations are not new. Thousands of years of mythology, folklore and alchemy about mechanical people, trick devices and grown biological creatures reveal a long fascination and fear with that which imitates nature. This chapter explores these relationships and stories and asks how remembering and engaging with them, out of curiously and not fear, helps us to imagine and create a future where AI and humans intertwine in beneficial relationships.
