Over 50 years ago, Stanley Kubrick’s classic film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, predicted a future in which interstellar spacecraft could be monitored and controlled by an artificial intelligence (AI) program, HAL 9000. In its single-minded effort to resolve a contradiction in its own programming, HAL systematically executes all but one of the ship’s crewmembers, disregarding mere human commands. The chilling nature of HAL’s behavior is amplified by its portrayal—a red cyclopean eye, along with a voice so unnerving that it went on to inspire Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of the cannibalistic serial killer, Hannibal Lecter (Arnold). Such was the introduction of computerized AI to worldwide pop culture.

摘要
