This chapter will provide the first three exploratory studies on the straw man. The first experiment will show that the locus of misrepresentation (misrepresentation of the standpoint vs misrepresentation of the argument) plays a role in the acceptability of the straw man and that a misrepresentation of the argument is perceived as more acceptable. It emerges from the second experiment that straw men are better accepted when the misrepresented argument is juxtaposed to the previous segment, rather than introduced with a causal connective such as puisque (closest to English since). Lastly, the third experiment provides evidence that the straw man is better accepted when the misrepresenting reformulation focuses on a single lexical item, compared to fallacies that are reformulated in an implicit way.
