This chapter introduces the reader to the core topic of this book, namely the straw man fallacy. It aims to discuss different approaches to the straw man highlighting two aspects, namely: (1) that the straw man has two essential characteristics researchers agree upon, and (2) that the straw man has mainly been assessed from theoretical perspectives. During this chapter, it will become evident why empirical approaches to the fallacy are needed.
