摘要

Based on the principles of green chemistry and sustainable development, biocatalysis have emerged as green and sustainable technology. Utilization of biomolecules as a catalyst assists inimitable and specific synthesis as the catalysts follow all the principle of “green chemistry.” The green chemistry principle can increase efficacy and reduce environmental burden during chemical synthesis. Although the field of biocatalysts has made significant progress but its full potential is yet to appreciate. This is partly due to some significant difficulties in understanding the biochemistry of enzymes. Therefore, the present chapter delves into better understanding the principle a method of green chemistry and will highlight via examples, the ways by which the green chemistry an reduce the harmful impact of chemical process and its related technology on the environment. In addition, the application of biocatalysts in various fields like Biofuel production, Fine Chemicals, Pharmaceutical industry, Food and Beverage Processing Industry has also explored, thereby indicating the sustainability of biocatalytic reactions. Moreover, its broader application will further be encouraged in the future by the emerging biobased economy.
