Oncocytic cells are thyroid follicular cells characterized by abundant, finely granular, eosinophilic cytoplasm and enlarged nuclei. “Oxyphilic” and, in the thyroid gland, “Hürthle” cells are synonymous, but the oncocytic terminology is preferable and consistent with the most recent WHO classification of thyroid neoplasms.
